Other Major Blood Group Systems

How many blood group systems do you know? One? Two?

Well, perhaps most of you aren’t aware of the other major blood group systems, besides the ABO (A, B, AB, O) and Rh (Rh+, Rh-). Maybe because the other major blood group systems are only considered in routine blood banking when the patients develop unexpected antibodies.

Diseases, which have been associated with the other major blood groups systems, are the following:
MNS BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: E. coli, malaria parasite
P BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: parasitic infections, paroxysmal cold hemoglubinuria (an autoimmune disorder transiently seen in children following viral infections).
I BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: hemolytic anemia
KELL BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: McLeod phenotype was common among young boys suffering from x-linked chronic granulomatous disease (CGD-a heterogeneous disorder characterized by an inability of phagocytic cells to kill ingested microorganisms).
DUFFY BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: malaria association
KIDD BLOD GROUP SYSTEM: warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia
LUTHERAN BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM: discovered in the serum of a patient with lupus erythematosus diffusus.

General knowledge of the other major blood group systems is applied to confirm specificity, to assess clinical significance, and to determine the availability of compatible units for transfusion.
