When learning about the Philippines, one must consider the location of the said country. The Philippines is situated in the Southeast Asia and is surrounded by  water. Batanes is the northernmost group of islands in this country. It is located approximately 190 kilometers away from Taiwan. The southernmost part of the country is Tawi-Tawi. Its distance from Borneo is only 60 kilometers.

One of the important facts a traveller should know about the Phlippines is the climate. The country has 2 distinct seasons:

  1. Wet. It usually starts in June and ends in February.
  2. Dry. Summer usually starts in March and ends in June. With the effects of climate change, dry season in this country has been shortened.
Another fact about the Philippines a tourist must know is the currency. Philippine Peso is the official currency of the Philippines having the following denominations:

  1. 1000
  2. 500
  3. 200
  4. 100
  5. 50
  6. 20
  7. 10
  8. 1
  9. .50
  10. .10
Language/Dialects

Filipino (Tagalog) and English are used in this country. Further knowing about the Philippines in terms of dialects lets you realize that the country has 153 different dialects being spoken all over this archipelago. But the commonly used dialect is Tagalog.

Foreign tourists need not worry when visiting this country. The reason for this is that most Filipinos can speak and understand English. (By the way, Filipinos love to watch films about love. Sadly, Love in the Time of Cholera was not that successful here.)

Travel guide books about the Philippines recommend tourists to always bring some cash when traveling in the Philippines. Checks and credit card transactions are not always allowed in some parts of the country. But do not carry more than $3,000 without declaring it upon arrival.

Just like visiting other countries, a tourist must always be watchful of his/her own luggage. This is another important thing to keep in mind when learning about the Philippines and how to travel here.
